Hello world!

March 10, 2012

My name is Steven Rosenhaus.

I am a fairly nice guy who has lived in New York City for all of his life. As to what I do, well, here’s the list:

  • Composer (“classical” concert works, music for theater, etc.)
  • Lyricist
  • Arranger
  • Conductor
  • Educator
  • Author
  • Show doctor (dramaturge for musicals)
  • Performer (vocals, guitar, mandolin, ukulele, keyboards)

Back in 2006 Palgrave Macmillan published Writing Musical Theater, which Allen Cohen and I co-wrote. It’s a good book (he said, patting himself on the back), but to save a tree or three Allen and I never put everything we thought about writing for the musical stage that we thought about. We certainly couldn’t go into the level of details we’ve delved into when teaching our composition students. So, after much hemming and and equal amount of hawing (and another 1/2 dozen years), I’ve decided to start a blog that will let me ruminate about composing for theater, about composing songs — about composing in general. I’ll probably mention personal stuff from time to time (but never too personal) too, just to mix things up. But I will not speak of politics here (that sound you will hear is me biting my tongue as it gets closer to election time here in the U.S.), or of religion, unless it’s absolutely germane to the discussion of writing music or lyrics or other related subjects.

I hope you decide to follow this blog. I will do my best to be interesting.
